Who Is Amaal Malik? Music Composer, Began Working At 15, Clinical Depression, Broke Ties With Family

Popular Indian musician, Amaal Malik is leading the headlines after he recently announced the news of being diagnosed with clinical depression. The popular musician is the brother of singer, Armaan Malik and the elder son of Israr Sardar Daboo Malik, also a popular figure in the music industry. Amaal Malik is a popular name who has composed some of the finest scores in Bollywood.

The singer got wide recognition by composing songs for M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and Salman Khan’s Jai Ho. The renowned singer and musician has produced background scores for films like Rowdy Rathore, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, Heroine, Youngistaan, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Golmaal Again and many others. Amaal Malik started his formal training in music at 8

Born in 1990 in Mumbai, Amaal completed his schooling from Jamnabai Narsee School and later graduated in Commerce from N.M. College. He began his formal training in music at the age of 8. He was also trained in Indian classical music under the tutelage of his grandfather, Sardar Malik. Since Amaal had a liking towards piano, he got training at the Trinity College of Music.

Amaal Malik started working after completing 10th grade

After completing grade 10th, Amaal Malik went on to assist music composer, Amar Mohile for the 2005 film, Sarkar and Shootout At Lokhandwala. He was just 15 when he began assisting various composers. In 2014, he debuted as a music composer and composed songs for Salman Khan’s film, Jai Ho. Amaal also composed a song for Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and earned IIFA Best Music Director of 2019. 

Amaal also composed music for the highest grossing film, Kabir Singh. Apart from singing, composing music and penning lyrics, Amaal also judged the singing reality show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs. Amaal recently collaborated with international singing sensation, Dua Lipa for Indian remix version of the song, Levitating.

Amaal Malik announced the news of being diagnosed with clinical depression

Amaal Malik shocked his millions of fans on March 20, 2025, when he took to his social media handle and announced the news of being clinically depressed. The singer revealed that he had spent relentless years creating 126 songs in the industry for the past many years. Despite all his efforts, he was made to feel not worthy, which has affected his mental health.

Amaal Malik breaks ties with his family

Amaal Malik not only announced the news of his depression but also blamed their parents for the rift between him and his brother, Armaan. He stated that their actions have created a huge distance between the siblings. He penned:

“This journey has been amazing for both of us, but my parents' actions have distanced us brothers from each other. All this has forced me to take steps for myself, as it has left a very deep scar in my heart."

The singer added that he felt inadequate and resentful despite his achievements over the years. He has been made to feel less. Amaal added that he is cutting off contact with his family for his own good. He concluded his note by writing:

"Today, with a heavy heart, I announce that I am stepping away from these personal ties. From now on, my interactions with my family will be strictly professional. This isn’t a decision made in anger, but one born from the necessity to heal and reclaim my life. I refuse to let the past rob me of my future any longer. I am committed to rebuilding my life, piece by piece, with honesty and strength."
