It was only a week ago when Karan Johar's Dharma productions dominated the headlines, as it was confirmed that Serum Institute of India's CEO, Adar Poonawalla acquired 50 percent stakes in Dharma through his Serene Productions, and the deal was of Rs. 1000 crore. Karan, himself confirmed the news and introduced Adar as the visionary and innovative leader, while the former will continue with his position of Executive Chairman.

While the exact reason that led Karan to sell off his Dharma production was not disclosed, recently a report by India.Com revealed the possible reason for the same. As per the buzz, Dharma was constantly running at a loss for several months, which eventually led Karan to take the decision. Well, India.Com reported that as per an analysis of Dharma Productions’ recent track record, the reason might be influenced by financial motives.

As per the analysis, India.Com revealed that from 2022 to 2024, Dharma production released 10 films in total, and among them, only one could make it successful at the box office. Talking about the other nine films, four among them, were average, two were flops, one was below average, and the other two were tagged as 'disasters'. The single hit, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani was made on a budget of Rs. 160 crore, and grossed Rs. 355.61 crore, as reported.

Four films that were considered average were Jug Jugg Jeeyo featuring Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor-led Brahmastra Part 1, Kill and Good Newwz. Jug Jugg Jeeyo had a budget of Rs. 85 crore and it made Rs. 136.13 crore at the box office, while Brahmastra Part 1 grossed Rs. 418 crore worldwide on a budget of Rs 410 crore. Kill and Good Newwz's box office earnings were Rs. 47.12 crore and Rs. 115.74 on a budget of Rs. 40 crore and Rs. 80 crore respectively.

Talking about the flops, Yodha, starring Sidharth Malhotra was not successful in making its mark at the box office, along with the recently released Jigra. While Jigra made the headlines, with Divya Khosla Kumar and Karan Johar's war of words and digs at each other over the social media handle, its box-office record was Rs. 52.07 crore on the budget of Rs. 90 crore. Those films that had 'disasters' tags, were Liger and Selfiee, and grossed Rs. 60.80 crore and Rs 23.63 crore, respectively, at the box office. While the actual reason for Karan Johar's decision to sell off his Dharma production isn't confirmed by the officials, this analysis of the production house's track record is somewhat making speculations about its successive loss firm.

Karan Johar confirmed his partnership with Adar Poonawalla

Talking about his partnership with Adar Poonawalla, Karan Johar said that from the beginning, Dharma had been synonymous to heartfelt storytelling with the essence of Indian culture. He added that his father had dreamt that Dharma would leave an impact, and he dedicated his career to expanding that vision. Karan also mentioned that Dharma would again take its legacy to new heights with his partnership with his close friend and visionary and innovator, Adar Poonawalla.
